Waubonsie Creek Watershed
The Waubonsie Creek Watershed was established in January of 1968 and is located in the southwest corner of Iowa, Fremont and Mills Counties. The Waubonsie Creek Drainage District was established in 1908 as a legal drainage district under Iowa drainage laws. Land treatment measures included level, parallel, and basin terraces, grassed waterways, woodland improvement, wildlife habitat development, and conservation cropping practices. Thirty-two grade stabilization structures were installed to limit and control gully erosion damage. There are twenty-three sediment storage pools within the thirty-two grade stabilization structure varying in size from 3 to 75 acres.
Waubonsie Creek flows in a southwesterly direction and drains into the Waubonsie Drainage Ditch as it emerges from the Loess Hills onto the Missouri River floodplain. Waubonsie Creek Watershed has a drainage area of 29,510 acres or 46.1 square miles and is approximately 10 miles long and 5 miles across at its widest point. A watershed sub-district was organized to levee taxes in accordance with Iowa law. Soil and Water Conservation District Commissioners from Mills & Fremont Counties have authority on Waubonsie Watershed.
